Get To Know Kendall Ludwig
Kendall is the CEO, President and Principal Designer for Curly Red Design in Oakland, Maryland. In her words, “Create an incorporation that strives to consistently make good design. Design print and web solutions for clients throughout the United States. Work with the client through conception to completion.”
Kendall’s passion for design began at a young age. As far back as Kindergarten, Kendall dreamed of being an artist. Growing up in Baltimore, Kendall pursued visual art in a range of mediums and attended university to study graphic design.
In her first job as a graphic designer for a speaker company, Kendall began freelancing as well. While she enjoyed her work, focusing on one client wasn’t engaging enough for her.
“I felt like I was in a creative rut,” says Kendall. “I was doing a lot of the same kind of work — I started freelancing as a creative outlet.”
She enjoyed the extra work so much that she decided to open her own firm, CurlyRed Design, in 2007. Six months later, she left her day job and pursued it full-time.
“It forced me to do a crazy amount of networking,” says Kendall. “I was trying to make as many connections as I could. It forced me to do that hustle”
In her time leading CurlyRed so far, Kendall has worked with a long list of businesses, helping them to develop their branding and marketing. One thing that Kendall has learned is that the concept of the brand is often talked about but not always clear.
“You’re trying to communicate to your audience why they should care about you,” says Kendall.
A range of concepts such as your business purpose, your differentiators, and more are what should inform your brand. It should be the answer to a question that consumers aren’t totally aware of even asking.
“Every brand of product that I work on, I’m going to take my cues from the client,” says Kendall. “It’s about what makes the most sense to them in trying to communicate what they want to communicate to the world.”
